Security software company uncovers new Toy Story 3 scheme
July 23, 2010
Internet Security News
Sunbelt Software recently reported cyber criminals are building scams designed around the release of Toy Story 3.
The new malicious scheme uses pop-ups and fake survey sites related to the recently released film to entice web surfers to click on dangerous links.
Users who think they may be downloading a complete version of the movie are instead redirected to potentially malicious ads and time-consuming material. Other versions of the scam attempt to persuade users to click on links related to the video game based on the new flick.
Security experts advise users to update their antivirus software and to keep ad-blocking capabilities on to prevent these scams from damaging systems.
Designing malware and phishing schemes around popular events or movies has become a money-making strategy for many cyber criminals. Recently, Facebook users were subjected to a malicious scheme targeting fans of the Sex and the City sequel, which spread quickly throughout the social networking site.
