Researchers uncover a Trojan and worm affecting .LNK shortcut files
July 26, 2010
Internet Security News
Online security experts recently observed an increased presence of malware affecting an unpatched Windows vulnerability through the .LNK shortcut files.
Security researchers have found two additional types of malware targeting the weakness - a keylogging Trojan named Chymin-A and a worm named Dulkis-A.
The former is a malicious tool cyber criminals have deployed to steal information from infected computers. The latter is a multi-layered worm that can cause numerous system problems for users.
With new malware roaming the internet, anti-malware leaders recommend users update their antivirus software and practice safe web browsing behavior.
The two attacks exploit a Windows shortcoming that fails to correctly authenticate specific boundaries for .LNK shortcuts. Security experts believe the attacks are spreading through USBs and infected websites.
Trojans are tricky tools that can lay dormant on a network or system for long periods of time before they are uncovered. Recently, researchers announced the presence of a Trojan that had been infecting a Linux server for seven months before it was discovered.
