Researchers say more spam messages contain malware
July 12, 2010
Internet Security News
A new security study found more cases of spam containing malware.
Malware-ridden schemes had never accounted for more than 3 percent of all spam messages on a single day in 2010, until last month, when malware spam comprised 12 percent of all spam on June 13.
Experts attribute the sudden rise in malicious spamming to cyber crooks attempting to reestablish a legion of botnets, after legal actions forced many to shutdown their operations.
With cyber criminals looking to regain control over users systems, security experts advise individuals to update their antivirus software to ensure their computers do not become compromised.
Researchers also found phishing attacks increased by 25 percent between May and June of this year, according to Information Week. Hackers have bolstered their phishing schemes by implementing automated toolkits, which doubled in use during that period.
Spam messages may also have increased in June because of popular events, such as the World Cup. Cyber crooks unleashed numerous spam messages associated with the international soccer event, flooding peoples email accounts with fake messages. July may also see a rise in spam, as criminals may create campaigns linked to Lebron James recent decision to play with the Miami Heat.
