Researchers find new ransomware compromising systems

Security researchers have uncovered new ransomware that prevents users from having full control over their system.

A ransomware attack occurs when a crook disrupts critical computer programs with a Trojan and then demands a ransom from users to fix the errors. Security experts advise users to update their antivirus software as a way to defend against the dangerous scareware.

The current scheme in the wild infects a user’s PC then forces them to make a small payment to a Ukrainian mobile phone network in exchange for a solution. The crooks behind the attack require 30 Grivna, or nearly $4, for the unlock key, though analysts are unsure whether the criminals actually send the fix.

With the Krotten ransom Trojan, crooks are able to corrupt users’ systems in numerous ways, such as by altering 40 registry keys for numerous Windows settings and adding vulgar-laden text to the Internet Explorer title bar.

A recent security company found the 3 percent of all web-borne infections in March derived from the Ukraine, which tied the country with Italy and the United Kingdom. China and Russia led the pack, accounting for 23 percent and 20 percent, respectively.
