New report analyzes malware threats during the second quarter of 2010

Security experts released a new report documenting internet threat trends during the second quarter of 2010.

Researchers found cyber crooks have implemented multi-stage attacks as a way to increase their effectiveness in compromising user systems. The new strategy combines spam messages with different SEO techniques to create a well-rounded assault.

Users can defend against blended attacks by combining strong antivirus software with intelligent web-browsing habits.

Hot topics and trendy news stories continue to be a focal point for many hackers, who will use popular keywords and phrases to lure individuals onto malware-infested websites.

Cyber criminals also used well-established domains, such as Gmail and Yahoo, to infiltrate people’s systems. By creating fake pages designed to mirror legitimate websites, crooks can trick users into divulging passwords and other personal information without realizing the ruse until it’s too late.

The World Cup, which began on June 11 and ended on Sunday, was one of the most-used events by crooks to spread malware. Criminals developed entire spamming campaigns, fake websites, corrupted links and fraudulent videos involving the event to convince users to share their private details.
