New online security study finds 1.2 million computers infected with malware through the Eleonore toolkit
July 22, 2010
Home & Office PC Security News
Security experts recently reported one in 10 PCs is infected with malware controlled by crooks who are leveraging the malicious Eleonore toolkit.
For two months, researchers monitored 165 website domains controlled by the cyber criminals using Eleonore. During that period, they discovered more than 1.2 million systems had become infected.
Experts said 10 percent of the 12 million global web surfers that visited the compromised pages had become infected by the toolkit, meaning cyber crooks could potentially monitor and remotely access millions of users private information.
With numerous security threats currently in the wild, online security leaders advise web users to update their antivirus software and install strong malware protection tools.
The study also found crooks were exploiting vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, as well as numerous versions of Firefox.
Recently, a security expert announced he would expose XSS vulnerabilities with Mozillas popular browser that could enable a hacker to obtain users passwords. Individuals are recommended to delete their stored passwords on Firefox before he showcases the weaknesses next week.
