New online scam targets antivirus vendor
July 29, 2010
Business & Enterprise IT Security News
Numerous antivirus experts have begun warning users of a new spam campaign that masquerades as a McAfee VirusScan Plus security product to trick people into downloading hidden malware, Softpedia reports.
The rogue email informs web users that by installing the files attached to the message they are automatically enrolled in a contest. To defend against the web threat, users are advised to update their malware protection and practice intelligent intenet-browsing habits.
The spam comes with a subject line of McAfee VirusScan Plus and reads: Download a FREE 30-day Trial of MCAfee VirusScan Plus and Be Automaticaly Entered to Win, the report relays.
Similar to many spam campaigns, poor spelling and incorrect grammar are key signs the messages are fake and possibly malicious. In the above message, hackers incorrectly spelled McAfee and automatically.
Hackers have previously designed malware schemes to look like antivirus vendors as a way of tricking users, as experts say individuals are inclined to trust a name brand with which they are familiar.
