Google has twice as much malware as Bing, Yahoo and Twitter combined, report finds

A security company released on Wednesday its 2010 midyear security report, which presented information on search engine malware and Twitter use.

Experts analyzed Bing, Google, Twitter and Yahoo over a two-month period, reviewing more than 25,000 trending topics and combing through more than 5.5 million search results. Results from the survey reveal Google as the king of malware distribution. The search engine churned up more than twice the amount of malware as the other three combined when searches on popular trending topics were performed.

The survey found most cyber crooks unleash their malware schemes between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. GMT. The top 10 terms used to distribute malware included three actresses, a playboy playmate and an NFL player.

Security experts continue to express the importance for users to update their antivirus software as a safeguard against malicious web attacks.

Social networking sites are not only being used by crooks to distribute malware, but have become subject to dangerous intrusions themselves. Twitter recently suffered an attack that centered around fake emails being sent to user accounts asking individuals to reset their passwords.
