Experts warn of new regionally targeted banking Trojans
July 2, 2010
Business & Enterprise IT Security News
Security experts have uncovered new regionally targeted banking Trojans that may pose a problem for malware detection software, according to the Register.
A security firm found detection rates for regional malware to be extremely low, ranging between zero and 20 percent, the report relays. The firm found two distinct malware attacks plaguing United Kingdom banking consumers - Silon.var2 and Agent-DBJP.
The former can be found at least once in every 500 UK computers, compared to one in 20,000 for the U.S. systems. The latter is also far more prevalent in the UK, infecting one in every 5,000 computers as opposed to one in 60,000 in the States, the Register reports.
Although antivirus software can be a dependable solution to defend against most malware, security experts also recommend safe web browsing habits as an integral method of protection.
The UK has experienced numerous Trojan and phishing attacks recently, though its infection rate is not as bad as other major internet-using countries. A March 2010 malware report found 3 percent of web-based infections stemmed from the UK, compared to the Russian Federation which was responsible for 20 percent.
