Experts say most malware distribution sent through email attacks
July 6, 2010
Internet Security News
Security experts have discovered a new theme during the first two quarters of 2010 in terms of malware distribution - cyber crooks are focusing more on delivery methods rather than on different vessels, the Tech Herald relays.
Spam has been the most prolific tool for crooks, with one antivirus professional stating the email scheme is much more than just a nuisance, it is a vehicle for heavy malware distribution, the Herald reports.
With message scamming appearing to be the vehicle of choice for many online criminals, security experts recommend users install the latest antivirus software to prevent their systems from becoming compromised.
Two new Zeus botnets and banking schemes have recently been linked to email scams, affecting thousands of people and multiple financial institutions based in the UK.
In addition, cyber criminals continue to use major events, such as the World Cup and popular individuals, as integral parts to their email scamming strategies, the Tech Herald relays.
The World Cup has been the center of multiple email messaging scams targeting fans of the global soccer tournament. Since the first match between South Africa and Mexico kicked off in South Africa on June 11, internet users have been targeted with anti-vuvuzela spam messages as well as emails claiming to offer free tickets. Many of the schemes involved dangerous malware that could infiltrate users systems.
