A 20-year-old Australian Hacker recently pleaded guilty to using a virus to infect 3,000 computers with an information-thieving Trojan.
Anthony Scott Harrison used the malicious Trojan to illegally obtain banking and credit card information from numerous individuals scattered across the world. Although the software only affected 3,000 computers, the virus was capable of reaching up to 74,000 systems worldwide.
Harrison pleaded guilty to four counts of modifying computer data to cause harm or inconvenience, two counts of possessing or controlling data to commit a serious computer offense and one count of dishonestly manipulating a machine for his own benefit.
Security experts warn that attacks such as those levied by Harrison occur frequently. To protect systems from unauthorized breaches, experts advise users to update their antivirus software and install strong malware protection.
Harrison will undergo sentencing submissions in late September.
Last month, the Australian federal parliamentary committee considered installing a cyber tsar to monitor internet security in the country. The goal of the new position would be to curb the rise in internet-related crime.
