Apple tops all vendors with most vulnerabilities

Nearly 40 percent of all security vulnerabilities found during the past five years can be attributed to ten technology vendors. However, the number of afflictions affecting PC users has risen, according to a recent security report.
Through the first six months of 2010, 380 vulnerabilities have affected PC systems, which is 90 percent of 2009’s total. If the numbers continue at the current rate, security researchers expect there to be 760 vulnerabilities at the end of the year, which is close to four times the amount detected in 2007.
Experts recommend users of all platforms update their antivirus software as a safeguard against potential security threats.
Apple products were ranked as the most vulnerable during the first half of the year, followed by Oracle, Microsoft, HP and Adobe to fill out the top five. Although Apple may have the most theoretical weaknesses, researchers say computers running Windows continue to be the main target for cyber criminals.
Third-party programs are one of the primary culprits for the increase in risk for users. In early June, many Apple computers were infected with spyware after users downloaded free screen savers from a site riddled with malicious files.
